Lovcen
Whether one is on Skadar Lake, in Herceg Novi or in the mountains to
the north. The massive peaks of Lovcen are visible from everywhere.
The 6220 hectare area has a special status among the national parks
in Montenegro. Here is not nature that matters the most; here it is
the cultural heritage. On top of the 1657 meter high peak of
Jezerski Vrh stands the mausoleum of Petar II Petrovic Njegos
(1813-1851), the most famous sovereign and poet of Montenegro. On
his deathbed he had already ruled that he should be buried on this
mountain.
For the visitor of
Lovcen, it is not only the mausoleum and the flora and fauna that
are of interest. The view of the landscape that was formed by
glaciers and karst also tells a lot about the meager lifestyle in
these mountains.
