Ostrog
Ostrog
is one of the most important centers of the Serbian Orthodox Church
in Montenegro. The monastery was built in the rocks high above the
Zeta valley. In old times, as a symbol of meekness, one climbed up
the steep, rocky path barefoot. Nowadays a windy road leads all the
way up to a parking lot next to the monastery, and barefoot pilgrims
are rare. The white building glows against the brown rocks from a
great distance.
The
founder of the monastery was Archbishop Vasilije Jovanovic. Together
with 30 other monks he decided, according to the chronicles, to
establish the monastery in two caves high up in the Ostrog Mountain
so that they would be unreachable by the Turks.
